20 weeks, 1 day
Weeks ago, I thought that this doctor appointment would never get here. It felt like an eternity until we would be finding out if Baby T was a boy or a girl. Fast forward to a few days ago and man, did time fly by!
We walked into the office and I was pleasantly surprised at the small amount of people. I checked in and took a seat next to Joe in the waiting room. We had this cute boy who was climbing all over the tables and talking about trains next to us. His mother was trying to distract him and he was oblivious to it all. I made a mental note to try to avoid bringing my kid to the doctors office if I didn't have to. (Yeah, I'm laughing at myself too.)
Shortly, Julie the tech called us back into the ultrasound room. (She was my favorite tech from our last visit so I was glad to have her.) The first thing she asked me was if I was comfortable and needed to go to the bathroom. Ironically, I told Joe as we were walking into the office that I had to go bad (shocking, I know) but somehow once we got into the room, I was fine. I didn't want to take the time when we were so close to getting a view of the babe. Of course, the first thing Julie says is wow, that bladder is full!
I'm getting ahead of myself. Before we started, we let Julie know that we wanted her to put the gender results in an envelope for us to open later this weekend. She said that would be no problem and we were good to go.
She started off by getting pictures of the profile and checking the positioning of the baby and my placenta. At this point, baby is breach but I have plenty of time for him/her to move. I have an anterior placenta which is good. We got measurements for the cerebellum and other ventricles in the brain and then she made sure to get a good picture of the upper lip. Why the upper lip, I'm not really sure. Next up was the heart and measuring and identifying the 4 ventricles. You could see them opening and closing very clearly. She measured another strong heartbeat at 141bpm. She continued on down the body and it was about this time that baby started going crazy. Julie was cracking up over it. I guess we have a roller and a shaker. She warned me that I would be feeling some strong punches very soon.
Shortly after, she started having trouble measuring the kidneys. She eventually got them and I found out later when meeting with Dr. Bennett that they are dilated a bit so they are going to monitor them at my next appointment just to be safe. I'm not worried as I've read this is a problem that will fix itself as time goes on. Since my appointment was in the middle of the morning, I had not eaten much that day....just breakfast and my morning snack. Julie wanted to get a look at the stomach when it was full or at least fullish so I get to have another ultrasound for my 24 week doctor appointment. This was supposed to be my last one of the pregnancy but they need to go back in to check again. Sounds good to me!
As she moved her way further down, she made sure to get the umbilical cord from a few angles. She also had to identify the two arteries and one vein within the cord. The vein supplies the baby with oxygen and nutrients while the arteries remove the deoxygenized blood. We're good to go there. She also got measurements and pictures for the legs and feet.
It's crazy how quick she moved her way through everything. Most of it looked like a big blob until she pointed something out but then it was really easy to tell what was going on in there. Joe has been making fun of Julie since the appointment because she was a little...shall we say, bubbly. He thought she was very entertaining, that's for sure. After getting everything she needed, she had us close our eyes and she snapped a few pictures of the goods. I will admit that the entire ultrasound I was not trying to peak but once she told us to close our eyes, I contemplated counting the number of keys she hit to type on the picture just to see if I could guess. Alas, I didn't cheat. I still have no idea what Baby T is.
The rest of the appointment was spent doing the normal checkup. Blood pressure was 117/77. Weight is still down 1 pound for the pregnancy but the same as my last appointment 3 1/2 weeks ago. No blood draw this time!
So overall, mostly good stuff. Didn't have a perfect ultrasound but all that means is I get to have another one! Pictures are printed but they are stashed away with the gender results. We find out if we will have a son or daughter tomorrow!

20 weeks!
20 weeks
This week went by crazy fast! (I guess I could really say that about these last 20 weeks as well!)
As you can see, I changed shirts. It was time. I know it's black and that's depressing but I wanted something solid and this was my best option. If I have any pregnant ladies reading this, get yourself a bunch of Body V-neck T's from Gap. They are the shit. I've already got two and may stock up on all the colors before summer is over.
Moving on....I have to mention this story of Joe from a few days ago. He let me know that he had a work event on Thursday evening in Taylorville which is about an hour away. My first reaction is "oh, okay. I just won't make dinner. I can figure something out for just me." His first reaction is "I knowwww, it's picture day but we'll make sure to take it as soon as I'm home." Ha! I've trained him well. :)

I'm calling this week the week of ice cream (cookies n cream to be specific) rather than the cantelope week. It's quite ridiculous really but it's soooo good. I've had a bowl every night since Sunday. I've already decided that a blizzard is a necessity come Sunday. Otherwise, business as usual in the food department. BOR.ING. Everyone keeps asking if I'm having any odd cravings and I kinda wish I would, just so that I would have something interesting to add to this.
Edited to add: I just saw a commercial for Dr. Pepper and I want one so bad now! I've had one sip of caffeine this whole pregnancy though so I'm planning to stick to that. And not because I think it's bad for the baby, moreso just a personal goal I've set for myself.
I started researching the hospital that I will be delivering at this week. We will have a full hospital tour but from what I've read I will have my own family suite with built in jacuzzi tub. I plan to take full advantage of the amenities! Speaking of classes, I think Joe and I have decided on taking four to prepare us (but, mostly him) for the baby. The first is "Birth and Beyond" which covers the basic birth, includes the hospital tour, talks about arrival into the hospital once I go into labor, general newborn care, what we should look for in a pediatrician, and answers any other questions we may have. Class #2 is "Prepared Childbirth" which will discuss more specific aspects of birth like breathing methods, relaxation techniques, c-sections and inductions methods. I'm really looking forward to taking this with Joe. I've pretty much researched obsessively on labor and delivery for two years now so I feel like I'm pretty in the know of what we will be discussing. But Joe is clueless and I think he will really enjoy this one....even though it's going to be a long 8 hours. Class #3 is "Infant Safety." This one is pretty much mandatory in my book. It covers CPR, childproofing the home, car seat safety and so on. And finally, Class #4 is Breastfeeding. Obviously, this one is pretty self explanatory.
So yeah, we will be spending quite a few hours in class this summer. I joked with Joe that we should sign him up for the "Super-dads" class but he wasn't all for that.

Baby cantelope is halfway grown! S/he is working on swallowing and digestion by ingesting amniotic fluid every day. Since the taste buds have formed, s/he is already increasing its palate. It's said that what I'm eating will come through the amniotic fluid. So after birth, the baby will be more apt to like these foods. Very interesting! I expect lots of trips for ice cream and cheetos. Also, it is said that the baby is getting accustomed to day and night so I may start to feel the baby be more active at a specific time of day as a result. I'm just really looking forward to feeling the baby on a more regular basis.
Tomorrow is doctor day!

Ode to the Eckhoff Van
19 weeks, 6 days
I'm feeling kind of nostalgic lately and boredom got the best of me the other night when I started going through old facebook photos. (Doesn't everyone do that when they're bored?)
So, I'll start from the beginning. The van came to be just as Allyson and I were getting our permits to start driving...I'm almost certain it was winter 2001, which would make me 15. My parents ordered it brand new to replace our huge green conversion van (that van deserves it's own post though). In the last 10 years, let's just say we've gotten our money's worth. This is the vehicle that survived three daughters with permits. It helped move myself as well as my sisters to college..and subsequently home each summer. It survived countless family vacations and many many trips to Marco Island. We drove it the day I found my wedding dress.
One of my favorite van stories has to be while taking it on one of the many trips to Deer Creek to see DMB. The actual year escapes me (they all run together anymore) but it was the trip of constant rain. This particular Deer Creek weekend, we were very unlucky to suffer through basically 3 days of rain. Everything was wet and, of course, we were camping so there was no getting around it. It was Saturday afternoon and like a gift from God, the sun came out. At some point, I was sent out to pick someone up. (Who that person was has since left my memory.) Our spot at camp was way in the back corner, near some shade and the showers. I got the van pulled out into the "makeshift" driving lane and headed towards the entrance. I drive towards the front and realize the the place where there was normally a exit lane is basically mud. Now, I could see lots of tire tracks in the mud so I forged ahead anyway. (For a split second, I thought that maybe I shouldn't be doing this. FORESHADOWING!) You guessed it, I got stuck. In the mud. Needless to say, I never made it to pick up the person I was supposed to pick up, but after much effort and countless people passing by staring at the idiots who got a van stuck in the mud, we were free! For the rest of the weekend, I got so much crap for that but luckily, nothing a little carwash couldn't fix.
I think it was the following year that the battery died on our last night at Deer Creek and we had to have it jumped before we could make the 3 hour ride home.
The van has had its fair share of road trips as well. We used it on the day of my bachelorette party. 7 of us crammed into it one summer to go to the drive-in movie at Gibson City. (If I remember correctly, this was Eric and Allyson's first real date and also the same night that I met my college roommates now husband. Friends, am I remembering correctly that we saw that awful War of the Worlds movie with Tom Cruise?)
Moving on....It also made the trip up to Chicago last September for Danni's bachelorette weekend. I'm pretty sure it made the voyage to St. Louis to see Lauren one summer. Just a few weeks ago, it took it's last official road trip up to Chicago again, but with Joe this time, to celebrate Miller's bachelor weekend. And this is just the times us friends have used it. I won't even start to the count the number of Cubs games my parents have driven it to. It's been loved.
My FB picture stalking didn't come up with nearly the number of pictures I thought it would but alas, I found some. (Obviously, the quality of these leaves a lot to be desired.)

And although, the van is technically still around (my parents haven't traded it in quite yet), they have a new vehicle for us to road trip in.

I see 10 more years and many more stories for this bad boy.

Weekend recap
19 weeks, 4 days
We had a much needed trip home to Pontiac this weekend. I knew it was going to be a busy one (which ended up being an understatement), but a great time nonetheless. The main festivities for the weekend involved the Miller wedding but we somehow fit in a ton of other stuff too.
Friday, we hightailed it from work straight to the church for rehearsal since Joe was one of the groomsmen. After rehearsal and dinner, we ended up going to BnR's with all the other groomsman and were able to meet Danni & Tim and Linds & Troy. Before I knew it, we were heading home at 12:30am....way past my normal bedtime that's for sure! Rachel actually texted me shortly after 12am asking me if I had died because she couldn't believe we were still out. I was really proud of myself for sticking it out that late even though it had been a long day.
I won't complain about my early wake up on Saturday (Seriously, why can I not sleep past 7:00 anymore?) since Joe was up at 5:30 for a 6:45 tee time at the golf course. Crazy kid fell asleep about 1:30 on Friday night so he only got 4 hours of sleep. He is the only person on this planet who can do that crap and move on with his day like normal.
The wedding festivities were on Saturday and I am pretty embarrassed at the amount of pictures I took. Normally, my camera is attached to me but I just wasn't in the mood for some reason. Here are a few of the measly snaps I was able to get. (Not even a single one of the bride or groom = pathetic!) Basically all of them were taken after midnight when most everyone had left and I was the only sober person within the building. :)
Drunk guy #1 and drunk guy #2

Joe and Lisa have had a constant poke war going on FB for a good 4 years now.

I asked Jake to take our picture and the poor kid could not figure out what to do. (Ahem, too many beers?) I put it in auto so all he had to do was push the shutter button but after a couple of tries, I settled with this weirdly lit one.

Sunday was my favorite day of the weekend. I spent a few hours laying out by the pool and after a quick storm, we were able to hit up Kevin Francis' high school grad party. (How is he that old already?! I feel like he should be 7 forever.) The whole ride back home Joe and I hardly said a word because we were both so exhausted. It was an extra early bedtime for us on Sunday.

19 weeks
19 weeks
I've had a junky day at work so this should be quick so I can get to packing for this weekend and to bed.

I know I say this every week but I think I've hit another growth spurt. My shirt is extra short and I think I'm only gonna get another week out of it before I have to switch to another one. A quote tonight from Joe to me was "Babe, don't take this the wrong way but you are getting big." Ha! I love how he warns me before he insults me. I do agree with him though so no offense was taken. I've noticed quite a bit more cramping this week which makes sense with my growth spurt.
I am sleeping freaking awesome though. I wake up very refreshed even before my alarm goes off at 6:45 and I look forward to just laying in bed for a while in the mornings. Pre-pregnancy, I was mostly a side-sleeper so I've had no problem having to continue that. Just this week, I've started to be uncomfortable laying on my stomach. It puts too much pressure on my hips or something.
This week, Joe and I got to meet little Annabelle Dockter. She is a doll and barely made a peep the whole time we were at Ben and Emily's. Joe is pretty leery around itty bitty babies but he did well holding her. She looked extra snug in his arms.

This week I'm struggling a bit with my eating habits. I'm not really hungry and I almost have to force myself to eat snacks because I know I need too. I could easily get away with eating my normal granola bar for breakfast and a pbj for lunch but I've really been trying to get in a morning snack (some type of fruit) as well as a few afternoon snacks (usually a yogurt and something salty like peanuts.) Most of the time I'm just eating because the clock says it's time to have a snack. This week I picked up a pack of V8 singles to keep in my work fridge. So far I've had one of those every day to help get some more of my fruits and veggies. I can't get enough water, however.
I should keep forcing myself to eat, right?

Mango week has some pretty gross stuff happening. Vernix Caseosa, a greasy white substance made of baby hair, oil and dead skin cells, is coating the babies skin as a protectant from the amniotic fluid. I'm totally picturing this to look like bacon grease after it's hardened a bit which probably increases the grossness factor. Also, the babies body is now proportional with the arms and legs stretching out to match the head and torso. Loud sounds and feelings of stress or alarm may be communicated to the baby, thanks to its heightened senses. Great, now I'm going to stress about the baby getting stressed about my stress. :)
We have a busy weekend planned in Pontiac that is much needed. I had a big breakdown tonight and I think it was heightened by the fact that we haven't gotten away in a few weeks. I need the distraction, plus who doesn't love a wedding! Stay tuned for recaps..... on Sunday if you're lucky!

3 years and counting
18 weeks, 5 days
May 17, 2008. Wedding day.

The day was planned for what felt like forever. (2 1/2 years practically IS forever in engagement years.)

It's weird how you count down to this big day and then in the blink of an eye, it's past.

It was THE.BEST.DAY.EVER. I'm serious. Even three years later, it is still my very favorite day.

Happiness. I was 100% happy.

The ceremony was perfect. The weather was perfect. The speeches were perfect. The band was perfect. Per.fection.

I remember taking everything in as the day began to wrap up. I remember wanting it to never end. I remember being so excited that Joe and I could finally live together after 5 years of being mostly apart.

I wish I could relive that day again every day, but once a year will do.
