Shapes

10 months, 25 days old

Until recently, Barrett hasn't really utilized his shape sorter in the correct way. He loves picking up the shapes and transferring them from hand to hand. He loves smacking them together to make sounds. Both are good development qualities for him to learn and practice, for sure. The last few weeks, however, we've been trying to get him to actually use the shapes by putting them in the correct slots. He is improving and doing a decent job but not quite there yet. I'm writing about it now because even though he usually doesn't get it right, I cannot get over how hard he tries.

015

He concentrates so hard to twist the shape to go in the slot. He knows what he's supposed to do, he just can't get it. It's completely fascinating. I will usually help him arrange it eventually and we make a big deal out of him getting it right. He loves that. He tries and tries and tries. After we've gone through them all, he picks it up to dump them back out again.

024

013

Bad mother alert but one of my favorite parts about sitting down to practice is when he gets frustrated with himself. He bangs the shapes on the top as if that will force it into the hole and then eventually he just throws the stupid thing. Ha! I shouldn't smile and laugh because it's not good that he throws things to release his frustration but it's just too cute.

011

He'll be doing it all on his own in no time!

B and Mommy

10 months, 17 days old

009 011

It's not often that I am in pictures because I'm usually the one taking them. I am attached to my camera and bring it everywhere to be sure that I can capture every possible moment. I might be slightly overboard but whatever...Thankfully, Joe has learned the basics on how to use my camera in manual so when he does pick it up, I get some pretty good pictures.

006

This particular day was our first summer rain. It was a steady sprinkle when I picked up Barrett from daycare and he was completely confused as to what was hitting him as we walked to the car. It cracked me up so when we got home, I knew we had to go out and play a bit. Shortly after we got out there, it picked up and turned into a real rain. He was so intrigued and loved it.

This picture shows a few of Barrett's quirks. When reading books, he usually wants to hold a second book. This also results in him putting said book on his head. Odd kid.

Month 10 movie

10 months, 13 days old

I'm not sure if I've explained how I labeled his monthly movies. Technically, this movie is from when he was 9 months old. However, it is the 10th month of his life. Month 1 was from newborn to 1 months, Month 2 is from 1 month to 2 months old....and so on.

So his 10th month movie consists of his 9th month birthday to his 10 month birthday. Enough of that...

This kid cracks me up

10 months, 11 days old

We were finishing up dinner last night when Barrett decided he was going to do this weird grunt-giggle. It was the first time he'd done it and he just kept going and going. It's a good thing I always keep my phone close.

Bonus: Was able to get him clapping on camera as well!

Sick boy

10 months, 9 days old

I spent my day yesterday taking care of a sick little man. We've had a pretty decent stretch of time with no real illnesses (ear infections mess with his sleep and mood but it doesn't affect much else). This normal cold has rocked his world though. Poor guy has the worst runny nose. He is sneezing every 10 minutes and snot just shoots out. He won't let me get anywhere near him with the nosefrida to suction him out so his sneezes are the only way to get rid of the gunk. Poor guy coughed so hard during dinner than boogers/mucus shot out of his mouth. His eyes are also watering really bad. It looks like he's crying but he's not. He had "tears" streaming down his face all day long.

sick

He took 3 long naps yesterday and each time I went into his room and turned on the humidifier, he'd lay his head down on my shoulder and cuddle. This is so unlike him so it was sad but sweet at the same time. For his morning nap, he actually let me rock him and he ended up sleeping for an hour upright in the chair with me. We haven't done that since he was 4 months old. Normally, he wiggles around and whines and leans towards his crib but not today. Poor thing.

I think the extra sleep did him good because he does seem to be doing better. Meds, bath, lots of cuddles have helped. Even though he's not his normal self, I loved being home with him. Unfortunately, he's back at daycare today and hopefully he makes it through it okay. It really sucks not having family/backup to help in these kinds of situations.

And since he napped so great, I got a bunch of birthday party prep done. His invites are ready and half of them are stuffed in envelopes (need to pick up some more), his picture banners are almost done (just need to add in the last month and then string them together), cupcake toppers are half done, all the extra serving pieces, plates, silverware, etc.. are bought, decor is all compiled just need to assemble. I've started stocking up on some food items that I can buy ahead but we need to order the cupcakes as well. We're getting there. With 70 people on the guest list, I'm trying to get started early so I'm not rushed with everything. I can't believe we're so close already!

And since we're keeping the theme a secret until invites are out, here's just a sneak peek of what I've been working on. (I really hope this kid likes blue and green because they are "his colors.")

10 months old!

10 months, 3 days old

Let's start with talking about picture taking. Two words: It sucks. Joe and I were seriously sweating while trying to get this months sticker pictures taken. As time has gone on, the amount of pictures I get of him are decreasing. Don't get me wrong, I'm still taking an ungodly number but it's less and less because he just doesn't sit still. If I were to use one word to describe him this month, that would be it. He's constantly on the move. On top of the crawling, he is cruising all over the place. He loves to stand up next to our coffee table and he will walk around in circles. He also will switch from the table to the couch and walk back and forth that way. His newest trick is standing completely on his own. He has done it a handful of times just in the last few days. I'm afraid we'll have a walker before we know it!

016web 032 003 039
010 027 033 012 022 007 004

Onto my favorite topic of discussion it seems....sleep. Last month was a bit rough in this category but he's made up for it pretty well this month. We still have the random days where he wakes at 4am but that is getting pushed back further and further. Most of last week he went to sleep at 6:30 and slept until 6am. A few nights ago, he slept from 5:30 to 7 with one very short wake up to eat. He's been a rockstar in the nap category this last week too especially at daycare.

And since his schedule has adjusted yet again, here's the low down of a normal day.

6:00............Wake up and eat a 5oz bottle (usually back to sleep, maybe not)
7:00-7:45.......Up for the day, get ready, commute
7:45-8:00.......Breakfast
8:00-9:00.......Play
9:00-9:15.......5oz bottle
9:30-10:45......Nap
11:00-11:15.....Lunch
11:15-12:30.....Play
12:30-12:45.....5oz bottle
12:45-2:00......Play
2:00-4:00.......Nap
4:00-4:15.......5oz bottle
4:15-4:45.......Play
4:45-5:45.......Commute & Dinner
6:00-6:15.......3oz bottle
6:15-6:30.......Bath, books, bedtime

So he's essentially adjusted to 2 decently long naps as opposed to 3 smaller ones. I much prefer this.

021

The food category is going pretty strong. Little Man will eat just about anything. We introduced pancakes this month and he is absolutely obsessed. He completely shovels it in and it's really hard not to laugh. He will eat an entire medium sized one all on his own along with some fruit for breakfast. I didn't mention this last update but we are completely done with purees. The only thing he lets me feed him is greek yogurt. We started eating together at the table every night a few months ago but now it's even easier because he eats what we eat. Don't get me wrong, he's still picky almost on a nightly basis but I don't let it get to me because I know if I tried, he would eat the same thing the next night. I guess adults are like this too. Some nights I just don't feel like eating broccoli even though I like it.

031

While this month has been so fun in many ways, it has not been without frustration. Have I mentioned here that Barrett still has no teeth? Yep, none....still. I believe that this has been a major factor in his...shall we say...crappy mood. Two weekends ago was especially challenging as it was non-stop whining. I thought for sure we would get some teeth to pop through as a result. Alas, still none. Thankfully this past weekend, he was an angel and happy. Who knows what the deal is. B has always wanted pretty constant attention and that is still in full force. Now that he crawls, if one of us is away from him, he crawls to us, stands up and just grabs on and looks up at us. If he could say "Up", that's what he would be saying. He wants to be held or at least have someone sitting next to him while he plays. Attention seeking is a good description for him. And can we talk about how much I hate diaper changes these days? If I could pay someone just to do that for me, I would. He will not sit still. It's awful.

012

Now, while he has some less than stellar traits, his good traits far outweigh the bad. Joe and I are so lucky. One of the funniest things he does these days is play with faces. He used to just touch cheeks and kind of pet peoples faces. Now he full out plays with faces. He will poke eyes, mess with nostrils, and his favorite is to shove his entire hand in your mouth. If you stick your tongue out he will try to grab it and laugh and laugh because he can't quite get it.

009

I recently posted his monthly stats so I won't repeat myself but I want to talk a bit about Barrett's size. He is average in height and weight but we still refer to him as our chunky boy. He just looks like a tub. Who doesn't love a good thigh roll though? He is in 12 month onsies and even some 12-18 month stuff. That's a bit big still but in order to get enough wear out of it, I've been putting it in the rotation. He wears mostly 12 month bottoms but shorts are still so long on him. They will fit perfect in the waist but are essentially capris. Whatever, he's still cute.

023

I can't believe I haven't mentioned this in his monthly posts yet but Bubs is completely in love with the ABCs. I've been singing them to him since he was weeks old whenever he gets fussy and it's basically the thing that is our last resort to get him to stop crying. He was pretty inconsoliable, randomly at about midnight one night, and he would just lay on my shoulder while we swayed back and forth and I sang him the ABCs. As soon as I start, he calms down and closes his eyes. Unfortunately, I had to sing them for about 30 minutes straight over and over before he would let me put him back to bed. We sing them almost daily.

016

One of his favorite things right now is his music table. This month he has really starting interacting with all of his toys but he will always go back to his music table. He picks up the balls and sends them down the slide over and over. He loves to press the buttons and make it sing to him. He also loves his push toy. Since all he wants to do is walk and stand, it's not too surprising that these are his favorites.

And finally, I can't end this post without talking about hats...specially baseball hats. Barrett is completely beside himself when he is around a hat. If you are wearing one, specially his dad, he just squeals and squeals. I really need to get it on video because it's my favorite thing in the world. Needless to say, dad is his favorite person most of the time because he's usually wearing a hat.

019

Before we know it, our baby boy will be 1!
