B and the birthday boy!

No surprise, Barrett ate all his food but the chicken. Thankfully, he eventually ate a few bites.

Project 365: Week 7
2 years, 4 months old
Hmmm, guess this never published last week.
02-10-14
We've had some problems getting Barrett to eat his dinner even though we know he's hungry and that he likes what we are serving. Tonight, we said no tv until he ate at least a bite. 1 1/2 hours later and he finally succumbed (after a bath, of course).

Crazy hair boy
02-12-14
Joe picked up B some mouthwash. He always holds water in his mouth and spits it out in the bathtub so we thought he would get the concept of spitting out mouthwash. Yeah, not so much. He swallows it like medicine.
02-13-14
His crib is a nice place to read some books

Happy Valentine's Day! All dressed up for his party at school

Barrett went out to help Grandpa shovel the driveway today. He has his own little mini shovel that he uses to scoop the snow and promptly dump it all out.

2 1/3 years!
2 years, 4 months old
It's been 4 months since our last full Barrett update so I think it's time. Let's see how long I ramble on.
He most certainly is growing out of his toddlerdom and into a kid. His chubby cheeks that he was still sporting a bit at his birthday are definitely gone. We haven't been to the doctor since his 2 year well check in October so I'm not sure how much he weighs. I'd guess he's about 30 pounds. We measured his height a while back and he was right at 35 inches. He's in size 6 diapers which should last until he's potty trained permanently.
Speaking of potty training, we are not in any consistent pattern yet. He's much more successful at going at school than he is for us. I'd imagine because all the other kids are doing it. He also eats and sleeps great for them and as you'll read in a bit, we are not so lucky. Back to PT, if he wants to sit, we let him. If he doesn't want to, then he doesn't have too. I will not be fighting him on this and plan to let him take the lead. Maybe when he reaches 3, we'll push more. I also have zero problems changing him and not having to rush around finding a bathroom when he has to pee. Diapers are just fine.
I updated a while back on the sleep issue and we don't really have much of a change. He still sleeps in the guest room, still needs us to lay with him and rarely makes it a full night alone. Eh, whatever. Naps are status quo at school but we've had a few days where he's skipped them completely for us. Barrett gets the best end out of that deal because it usually means he gets a movie so we can all have a little bit of quiet time. We'll get on the ball here eventually and get him his own bed. Full size mattresses are expensive, yo.
Food is a bad topic. I've decided he can live on Air and maybe string cheese alone. Add in some goldfish and he has rounded out his meal. We ordered pizza last night and he refused to touch it. He ate 3 full pieces the last time we had pizza. If he could snack all day, he would. He would probably eat pbj every single meal, every single day. He does still get what we fix for dinner and nothing else if he doesn't eat it. The nights where I know he doesn't like what we're having, I'll make a substitution for him. This will always drive me nuts for some reason because I know there is no rhyme or reason to it.
Silly quirks about Barrett: A part of his calm down routine in bed (this is going to sound so weird) is he likes to put his nose in my closed eye sockets. The first time he randomly did this, I giggled, and now he giggles. Every.time. His blankie and two left hand fingers are still his best friends. Not unlike all other 2 year olds, Barrett picks the same 6 books to read every night, "ABCs of golf, Trucks, Goodnight Moon, Big Red Barn, Does a Kangaroo have a Mother, too and ABCs of Wrigley Field."
We've had a crazy winter (as everyone has) and needless to say we are ready for Spring. Barrett thrives on being outside so it will make our life easier when we can play after school/work. He is definitely a snow lover though, as well. Kid does not understand the concept of cold. Last year, we only had one real snowfall and I remember hoping we would get a little more so B could play in it. Did that wish ever come true! My dad, sisters and I took him out sledding on the golf course last weekend and he was IN LOVE. We also found out this month that Barrett will be getting his first cousin! Finally, the kid will get to share his attention with someone and just in time for him to turn 3.
Next month, Barrett will take his first plane ride and his first trip to the beach. We will leave Pontiac at about 6am to go to the airport and land in Kauai at 10:30pm, our time. That will make for a very long day. He'll be a seasoned pro (6 flights) by the time we get back. Fingers crossed on all going smoothly.
B is still a big sports fan. Always hitting balls with his golf club and shooting in his basketball hoop. He and his dad play catch with their baseball gloves all the time too. Another big reason why we want to get outside! Barrett is very much a movie boy. He loves them all! Favorites are still "Punzel", Peter Pan, "Summer" (aka Frozen), Nemo, Cinderella and Woody. He loves Merida and Tarzan and Tinkerbell too but will sit still for you any time you put in something. We listen to my Disney box cd set in the car to and from daycare each morning and if he's whiney or wants something (usually his blankie or his dad) then all I need to do is turn on "It's a Small World." Totally brainwashing him for our trip in the fall.
Age 2 is a challenging year and we've had our challenges with Barrett. He is very much so trying to show his dominance. He's not really a tantrum thrower though at least in the "throw myself on the floor and flail" kind of way. He, mostly, (fake) cries and whines and screams when he's not happy. We have not taken him out to dinner in many months though because I would rather cut off my toes. He cannot sit still and even more so doesn't want to do what we want him too. I'd say that's the biggest struggle at this age….Barrett wants to do the exact opposite of us in EVERYTHING. I try to give him choices to help give him some independence. Although, I keep waiting for the day to come where he doesn't let us pick out his clothes and he's not there yet. Thank god. I am way too obsessive to let him pick out his clothes. I realize that all the things he's not been doing are going to start now that I've written them down. Expect a mismatched dressed kid rolling around the floor screaming in T - 1 day….
Little man is a huge sweetheart though. He gives anyone a kiss and hug who wants it. Never minds telling everyone he loves them. He is so incredibly animated and happy when we go to pick him up at daycare each day. He will run and yell "That's my mommy! She's here!" and gives me a big hug. It's my favorite time of day. He always has numerous kids give him love when he leaves each day too. He's such a joy. He talks all.the.time. Knows his favorite books by heart. Is so smart but with those smarts comes its challenges. He knows how to work you. He is a huge helper. Loves to bake cookies, help you carry laundry from the basement, or bring items into daycare.
We just love him so!

1 month and counting!
2 years, 4 months old
Happy Valentine's Day! We're not big on celebrating but I do have something else exciting to celebrate today.
1 month until we are off to paradise. Beach, snorkling, zip lining, hiking, sunshine, and WARMTH. I can hardly wait. I can probably skip the 3 flights with a 2 year old but we'll survive.
Hanalei Bay
Waimea Canyon
Ziplining
Queens bath
Paradise
Kauai, we're coming!

Reading books
2 years, 4 months old
I've already posted videos of our reading sessions but these updated ones are too funny.
Barrett always calls a firetruck "Grandpa's truck" (my FIL is a firefighter) but of course, when I try to get it on video, he dodges the question. Maybe he'll make a good lawyer some day.
Trucks is a nightly staple around here. He has most of it memorized as you'll see.

Day in the Life: Feb 1
2 years, 3 months old
Since Allyson and Rachel did it, I have to, too. I have pictures though!
5:59am: Hear a certain two year old climb out of bed requesting Daddy.
7:41am: Hear the same two year old walk into my room to wake me up. He runs back out to Dad and I start to check Facebook in bed. Joe spoils me most weekends and lets me sleep in.
7:45am: interrupted again by Barrett who wants me to get him some juice. I get up and get OJ and give him a banana. Start to make breakfast (which is 90% of the time Joe's job.) Check back into Facebook while food cooks.
8:00am: get the car ramp out for the crabby/whiney kid who gets no tv today. That last two seconds and he starts playing basketball with Joe while I turn on Disney pandora and continue making breakfast and make our bed.
8:30am: breakfast eaten (eggs and sausage) and I get to clean a very messy kitchen. Weekly, I disinfect all the counters, knobs and handles so that is on the list this morning. I put away and reload the dishwasher and hand wash dishes.
8:51am: the first Frozen song comes on Pandora, B is bored again so I get out his puzzles in his room. Joe starts to clean the living room carpet.
9:20am: I'm done with the kitchen, B has gotten out about every toy he owns but has barely played with any of them, Joe is cleaning our couch cushions which is also a weekly job. I ask Barrett to help me wipe down all our door knobs.
9:30am: I change B and get him dressed while Joe changed Pandora to my DMB station. He can only listen to Disney so much. I start to mop the floors while Joe and B make a fort to distract B from the wet floors. The fort doesn't last long when B climbs from one chair to another thinking a blanket will hold his weight and it obviously doesn't as he pummels to the floor. :) We find a rabbit outside to distract again.
9:47am: floors are done, so I sit down to check Instagram and post this picture. Obviously, B didn't stay away from the wet floors.
10:12am: I'm done checking Instagram (yeah, takes a while) so I change out wet clothes and try to put B down for a nap. Cranky butt is still out in full force.
10:23am: Nap time Fail. Let B walk around aimlessly sucking on his fingers, obviously exhausted. Put away a load of his laundry and pick up a few toys around the house.
10:40am: B gives up and requests bed so we all 3 go to lay down.
10:56am: Success! He's out. Joe gets in the shower while I fold laundry and catch up on DVR episode of Nashville from earlier in the week. Joe does about 95% of our laundry but I'm in charge of folding and putting away. Yeah, didn't do that this week so I've got about 5 loads to catch up on. My most hated task.
11:40am: Laundry is folded and put away so I pause tv to hop in the shower. Joe puts away dishwasher.
12:00pm: Nice long peaceful shower which includes more steps than my non-high maintenance self likes. I've lost about 75% of my hair in the last few months which requires about 5 different products and a pixie cut for this girl. Even with the short hair, it takes me just as long to get ready with all these steps. Good news is they are working and my hair is starting to come back so it's worth it. Anyways, I start my show back up and sit down to load and edit pictures from today.
12:27pm: B is awake so he gets a pbj, string cheese and some goldfish per his request. The boys sit and watch golf while I continue getting pictures organized in my bedroom.
12:50pm: I heat up some leftover lasagna from last night for lunch. B finds my purse and a sucker while emptying its contents. He does butt bombs on our bed.
1:10pm: Barrett and I start to make banana bread. Baking is one of his very favorite activities. I get the kitchen cleaned and more dishes loaded and start the dishwasher (second time today)
1:30pm: boys go downstairs to mess around so I head back to my room to gets pictures loaded to Flickr
1:50pm: B is bored and comes up to join me. I let him play "paintbrush" aka iPad. No clue why he calls it that because he doesn't paint on it. He decides to watch Elmo clips on youtube. I check Facebook.
1:55: Joe brings up another load of laundry so I get to folding and putting that away.
2:00pm: I head over to the spare room to make the bed and clean up Barrett's toy closet.
2:30pm: Take out the banana bread, set up laptop on table to start typing post, check Instagram, take iPad away from B. He starts to hop on his trampoline.
2:47pm: B and J start to do a block puzzle that I just opened from his birthday while I continue write post and upload more pictures.
3:11pm: Break to get some banana bread. Barrett tries to annoy his dad who is hoping to nap.
3:36pm: I'm all caught up on the post and pictures so B and I do airplane about 170 times. My thighs and abs are yelling at me.
3:45pm: Get out crayons and coloring book.
3:47pm: Barrett gets a time out for throwing crayons.
3:56pm: Clean up, diaper change and lay on the couch to watch the golf. B hits balls for a while which he always does when we watch.
4:30pm: singing songs and tickle with Barrett. He tries to suck on Joe's hoodie strings which is a bad habit his father does.
4:55pm: Golf is over so Barrett gets a movie. His first viewing of Dumbo.
5:15pm: While the movie plays, I upload all my insta pics from the last 3 months to Flickr as a backup. Used to do it monthly when I posted monthly reports on B but since I haven't done one since his 2nd birthday, I'm due.
5:39pm: Start dinner, check Instagram
5:57pm: Dumbo is over. I didn't realize it was so short. Flickr pictures are still loading. 104 takes a while.
6:00pm: Joe turns on some baseball movie from when we were younger…Little Big League maybe… Mullets are out in full force. B is enthralled. I empty the dishwasher (again.) The boys wrestle.
6:15pm: Dinner is ready. B actually eats everything but his pork chop. Score!
6:33pm: Diaper change, teeth brush, jammies, and clean up the random toys everywhere
6:40: read books in bed, and start bedtime routine. A certain somewhere is not cooperating. Up and down, up and down. He gets his humidifier taken away and his nightlight (after he sits two inches staring into it).
7:38pm: Joe takes B to his bed. He's over this.
7:50pm: I take over when Joe is frustrated. B feeds on the frustration and makes things worse.
8:09pm: He's asleep in his bed in his room! Only because I actually climbed in bed with him. I should get a few things done but instead I get in bed with Joe and veg in front of Big Bang Theory.
Sometime in the middle of the night, I hear our door slam open and a little voice say "I lay by you, Mommy" Ugh, how do you say no to that???
Since Allyson and Rachel did it, I have to, too. I have pictures though!
5:59am: Hear a certain two year old climb out of bed requesting Daddy.
