14 months old!

14 months, 2 days old

Sleep: I don't have anything new to really add to this. Barrett is in bed by 6:30pm, usually rolls around till about 6:45 and sleeps until 6:30-6:45 the next morning. I have almost no concept anymore of when he didn't do this. (Momnesia!) We did have a pretty rough night a week ago where he was up like 5 times from 10-1. Joe and I finally had enough and brought him into bed with us. He slept stellar then but let's just say that I wasn't quite as lucky. I'm pretty sure we can blame it on teeth because it hasn't happened since. Naps at home are also crazy easy as long as we time them close to 3 hours from his last wake up. If he wakes for the day at 6:30, we lay him down at 9:30 and he sleeps an hour. Then he's ready for his afternoon nap about 1:30 (3 hours from when he woke from his morning nap at 10:30) and sleeps another hour or so. The schedule will shift a bit depending on his wake up time and how long he naps but it's always a consistent pattern. I'm a little scared about when he'll be shifting to just one daily nap. I like being able to have two shorter breaks to get stuff done. It won't be long though.

Daycare has already moved to one nap which he takes from about 12:30-1:30....that's it. It's a good thing he has tons of playmates because he'd be a whiney mess at home if he only napped for 1 hour a day. I'd love to be a fly on the wall there though because 14 one to two year olds sleeping on teeny cots has to be a trip. No way in hell that would happen for Mom and Dad but he's got 13 other rugrats to follow and when they jump off a cliff, he's going to, too.

Food: Buddy has hit a bit of the picky eating stage. I've been making sure that each meal includes something that I know he will eat because he has been starting to refuse other things. Before, he literally ate whatever we put in front of him. One thing he prefers is to have whole pieces that he can bite into. Instead of cutting up pieces of strawberry, he wants the whole thing so he can take bites. He wants the entire string cheese, not broken into pieces. He'd rather take a bite from a whole banana and so on. Also, he eats almost any kind of meat. He has been refusing bacon the past few times we've given it to him but loves chicken and beef. Fruits are never a problem (he eats entire containers of berries especially blueberries in one sitting) but vegetables are hit or miss. He's dropped some of his milk intake and gets about 15oz a day. Oh, speaking of...we are off of bottles! I forgot that our last update he was still using that pesky morning bottle. I'm happy to say that less than a week after I wrote, they were gone. It was only 2 days dealing with him at 5am but as long as he got a breakfast immediately, he recovered. Since then, he's shifted back to his normal wake up time and even rolls around waiting patiently for me to come get him from his crib. When he was on a bottle, he literally screamed until I came and got him because he knew I would have a bottle for him.

Health: Weight wise, little man is at 24lbs. I can't remember if I mentioned last that he had his first installment of the flu shot. Infants, for the first flu vax need to get it in installments so this month we went back for his second round. All I can say is I hate you, flu shot. Every other round of vaccines he's gotten has had very little affect on him. He certainly slept a lot and was occasionally fussy but this darn flu shot did a number on him both times. He did have a re-occuring ear infection when we went to his ear check three weeks ago as well. Every other infection he's gotten has cleared up with a simple antibiotic. Since this one didn't heal, we had to up the strength of his antibiotics. Our check up yesterday showed that we are ear infection free for now though.

Behavior: This is a new category I'll be adding to his updates. It seems like this past month he's turned into real person. Not that he wasn't before, but he is more than just a personality now. He makes decisions and understands what is happening. He does things deliberately like pick up his water glass when we ask for it or sits down immediately when we get his shoes out because he knows we need to put them on. None of this happened over night but it seems like he is really learning and comprehending what each little part of life is. He is a very curious kid. In addition to this, Barrett has hit a bit of a defiant phase. I'd imagine it's pretty developmentally in line with his age, but he is testing us. He does something and we will tell him no or redirect him and he'll look us in the eye and go right back to disobeying. We're not to the point where we are incredibly frustrated by it because we know he's only learning but it's hard to decide when to draw the line and make it a teachable moment. People weren't lying when they said it only gets harder with age.

His current loves: Climbing, making a mess, being the center of attention, laughing, the vacuum, toy cars, snacks, boxes and wrapping paper holders.
